Who should do Pilates?

Do I need to have experience with Pilates to join a class?
Not at all! Pilates is suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners. Our instructors offer modifications for different fitness levels, ensuring everyone gets a tailored experience. If you're new to Pilates, we recommend starting with private sessions to build a solid foundation and understand the fundamentals at your own pace.
Which type of Pilates is best for beginners?
A few private sessions is a great place to start since it teaches core principles like breathing and alignment. At SHINE Movement Pilates, we also offer beginner-friendly Harmony-Reformer Flow classes to help you feel confident using the equipment.
What should I wear to a Pilates class?
Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothes that allow freedom of movement. Avoid loose clothing that might get in the way of exercises. GRIP SOCKS REQUIRED!
How often should I do Pilates?
For best results, aim to practice Pilates 2-3 times a week.
Are Pilates classes safe for people with injuries?
Yes! Pilates is known for being gentle on the body and is often used for rehabilitation. Our instructors are trained to work with clients with injuries and can modify exercises to suit individual needs. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise program.
Do I need to book in advance for a class?
Yes, we recommend booking in advance to secure your spot, especially for popular classes. You can book online through our website under schedule or app.
Do you offer privates/duets/group privates?
Yes, we offer private, duet, and group private sessions. You can schedule private sessions directly through our website or app. For duet, trio, or group private sessions, please email us hello@shinemovementpilates.com to arrange a time that works for you.
What should I bring to class?
All you need to bring is yourself! We provide mats and other equipment, but feel free to bring your own mat if you prefer. Don’t forget a water bottle to stay hydrated and your grip socks! You can also purchase grip socks from us!
Can I try different type of classes before committing?
Yes! We have 3 for $85 for first-time visitors. This is a great way to experience the classes style and see if it's a good fit for you.
I am pregnant, which classes can I take?
Congratulations! We understand this is a special moment for you and encourage you to continue moving with us. If you are early in your pregnancy, you are welcome to attend any classes. For clients that are 13 weeks and beyond, clients are limited to Prenatal Pilates and Private classes. Please consult with your doctor and have receive medical approval to continue practice.
Why is Pilates good for women (and men)?
Pilates supports better posture, pelvic stability, and total-body strength — benefits that apply to everyone. It’s gentle on joints, making it a sustainable fitness choice for both women and men of all ages.
Can Pilates help with back pain?
Yes. Pilates strengthens your core and supports spinal alignment, which can significantly reduce or prevent back pain. Many of our clients in Williamsburg come to us specifically for back or posture issues.
Can Pilates improve posture and make you taller?
While Pilates doesn’t literally make you taller, it elongates and strengthens your spine, improving your alignment and helping you stand taller and more confidently.
Can Pilates tone your body and arms?
Definitely. Pilates sculpts long, lean muscles through slow, controlled resistance. Regular Reformer or mat classes will tone your arms, abs, and legs without adding bulk.
Will Pilates give me abs?
Yes! Core strength is the foundation of Pilates. With consistent classes, you’ll notice stronger, more defined abdominal muscles and better control of your movement.
Can Pilates build muscle?
Pilates builds lean muscle through resistance and bodyweight exercises. It’s excellent for balanced strength development — ideal if you want definition without heaviness.
Can Pilates grow or lift your glutes?
Yes. Many Pilates movements target the glutes and hips for lift, strength, and tone. Reformer exercises, especially leg and bridge sequences, are great for building a sculpted lower body.
Can Pilates help with weight loss?
Pilates increases muscle tone, boosts metabolism, and improves posture — all of which can support healthy weight loss when combined with good nutrition and regular movement.
What is your cancellation policy?
Group classes: 12 hours' notice is required for cancellations.
Privates/duets/trios: 24 hours' notice is required for cancellations.
Group privates: 72 hours' notice is required for cancellations.
Late cancellations will result in a lost credit. Please make sure to cancel within the required time frame to avoid this charge.
